영어 비교급 & 최상급 (더 크고, 가장 좋은 걸 말하고 싶을 땐?)

오늘은 영어 문장에서 ‘비교’를 표현하는 법에 대해 알려드릴게요.
누군가보다 더 크다, 더 빠르다, 혹은 가장 예쁘다… 이런 말은 일상회화에서 정말 자주 쓰이죠!

바로 이럴 때 필요한 것이 비교급(comparative)과 최상급(superlative)이에요.

 

 

비교급 – 누구보다 더 ~하다

 

비교급은 두 개를 비교할 때 사용합니다.
형용사나 부사에 -er을 붙이거나, more + 형용사로 만듭니다.

✅ 1) 짧은 단어(1음절 형용사): 형용사 + -er

• tall → taller
• fast → faster
• big → bigger (g 중복!)
• nice → nicer

문장 예시:

• He is taller than me.
• This car is faster than that one.

✅ 2) 긴 단어(2음절 이상): more + 형용사

• beautiful → more beautiful
• expensive → more expensive
• difficult → more difficult

문장 예시:

• This dress is more beautiful than that one.
• English is more difficult than math.

❗예외: clever, narrow, quiet 등 2음절이지만 -er도 가능

• clever → cleverer / more clever (둘 다 가능)

최상급 – 가장 ~한, 최고로 ~한

최상급은 **3개 이상 중에서 ‘가장’**을 말할 때 사용합니다.

✅ 1) 짧은 단어: 형용사 + -est

• small → smallest
• long → longest
• big → biggest

문장 예시:

• He is the tallest in the class.
• This is the biggest apple.

앞에는 항상 the를 붙입니다!

✅ 2) 긴 단어: the most + 형용사

• beautiful → the most beautiful
• important → the most important

• She is the most talented singer here.
• This book is the most interesting of all.

• big → bigger / biggest
   → 끝이 자음 + 모음 + 자음이면 자음을 한 번 더 써요
• happy → happier / happiest
   → y로 끝나면 i로 바뀜
